Batch control is the documentary chain that ties production to specification to delivery. Each production run carries a batch number; that number is recorded against release orders, packing manifests and delivery dockets.

For staged programmes, batch continuity is a procurement decision made before production. Options are: single-run allocation of the full programme quantity, sequential runs with control-sample continuity, or defined-tolerance runs where between-batch variance is accepted within a specified envelope.

The reference sample — one held by the manufacturer, one by the project team — is the physical arbiter. Subsequent production is measured against that sample; disputes are resolved against it.
