Procurement Intelligence Brief | October 2026

Approvals reset, regional freight firms, the dollar softens.

The October Brief reads the procurement environment through August building approvals, regional container conditions, a softer Australian dollar and post-Golden Week production scheduling.

Executive Summary

01ABS August Building Approvals recorded non-residential building value of $5.53 billion, down 44.8%, following July's unusually strong $9.93 billion. The fall is read as a reset from an outlier month, not as a 44.8% deterioration in underlying commercial construction.

02Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index firmed across consecutive weeks to US$1,518 per 40-foot container on 1 October, while the World Container Index eased to US$4,434. Regional conditions, rather than global ones, are the relevant signal for Asian-origin flooring.

03The Australian dollar softened through late September: RBA reference rates on 29 September were AUD/USD 0.6987 and AUD/CNY 4.6857, against 0.7123 and 4.7700 on 22 September.
