Substrate preparation is the work performed on the subfloor before the finish is installed. It is not optional and it cannot be shortened without cost downstream.

Grinding removes surface contamination, laitance and high spots. Patching fills low spots to the tolerance specified by the finish manufacturer — typically 3 mm variation under a 3 metre straight-edge for engineered timber, tighter for large-format vinyl. Priming binds the prepared surface and provides the correct porosity for the adhesive system.

Where preparation is compressed, the finish is installed into an environment outside tolerance. The failure mode is not immediate; it is measured in hollow spots, joint fatigue and edge lift over the first year of service.
