Acclimatisation is the period during which product is held on site, in its final service environment, prior to installation. It allows the material to reach equilibrium with the ambient temperature and humidity of the space.

The period varies by product and manufacturer. Engineered timber typically requires 48 to 72 hours; solid timber longer. Vinyl and hybrid require 24 to 48 hours primarily for thermal equilibrium.

Acclimatisation is meaningful only when the service environment is representative — closed to weather, at operational temperature, with wet trades complete. Product delivered to a site with active concrete pours, unglazed openings or unconditioned air is not acclimatising to anything useful.
