Specifying wear layer thickness

Wear layer thickness is the single specification parameter most closely correlated with warranty length and long-term commercial performance.

Wear layer refers to the sacrificial upper stratum of an engineered timber or resilient product — the layer exposed to foot traffic and refinishing over the life of the floor. For engineered timber it is the solid hardwood lamella above the plywood substrate; for vinyl and hybrid it is the transparent surface film above the print layer.

Engineered timber

Commercial-grade engineered timber carries a wear layer between 3 and 6 mm. Below 3 mm the floor is not commercially refinishable; above 6 mm the price step is significant and the marginal benefit is limited. A 4 mm wear layer permits two full sand-and-refinish cycles over the service life.

Resilient systems

Vinyl and hybrid wear layers are quoted in mils or microns — 0.3 mm (12 mil) is the entry threshold for commercial classification, 0.55 mm (22 mil) is the reference specification for heavy commercial and hospitality applications.
