A moisture barrier is applied to a slab whose moisture content exceeds the tolerance of the adhesive or finish system. The barrier isolates the finish from continuing moisture emission.
Two general systems are used. Liquid-applied epoxy barriers are rolled or troweled onto the prepared slab, cured, and provide a permanent membrane. Sheet barriers are loose-laid under floating floors and provide a physical break rather than a bonded seal.
A moisture barrier is not a substitute for a slab that has not been allowed to cure. New slabs typically require 60 days per 25 mm of thickness before natural moisture equilibrium; barriers are used where the programme cannot accommodate that period.
