Currency Weakens as Golden Week Procurement Window Closes

A softer Australian dollar and firmer regional container pricing frame the final days before China's Golden Week holiday period.

Executive Read

The Australian dollar was softer this week. Reserve Bank of Australia reference rates on 29 September were AUD/USD 0.6987 and AUD/CNY 4.6857, down from 0.7123 and 4.7700 a week earlier.

Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index rose 6% to US$1,491 per 40-foot container in the week to 24 September, while the World Container Index eased 1% to US$4,468. Carriers continued to manage capacity through blank sailings approaching Golden Week.

The pre-holiday window for loading is now effectively closed. The relevant work this week is confirming post-holiday schedules, not accelerating purchasing.

01 — Currency

Reserve Bank of Australia reference rates on 29 September 2026 were AUD/USD 0.6987 and AUD/CNY 4.6857, compared with 0.7123 and 4.7700 on 22 September.

A weaker Australian dollar increases the local cost of the conversion component of USD- or RMB-denominated orders. The movement is more noticeable than last week's, and is relevant to packages being priced or committed now.

It is not, on its own, a reason to alter a procurement programme. Exposure sits across the interval between quotation, deposit, production, balance payment and freight, and should be managed against that cycle rather than a single week's movement.

02 — Freight & Logistics

Drewry's World Container Index stood at US$4,468 per 40-foot container on 24 September 2026, 1% lower week-on-week. The Intra-Asia Container Index rose 6% to US$1,491 per 40-foot container.

Drewry noted carriers continuing to manage capacity through blank sailings in the approach to Golden Week. The working consequence is reduced booking flexibility around the holiday, felt in departure dates more than invoices.

Both indices are directional readings of the regional shipping environment, not quotations for a China-to-Australia flooring container.

03 — Golden Week Scheduling

China's Golden Week holiday period begins on 1 October. For flooring in production, the question of whether loading can occur before the holiday has now largely been answered by the calendar.

Where loading has not been confirmed, the disciplined position is to agree the post-holiday production restart, inspection and departure dates in writing rather than compress inspection or documentation to meet a date that is no longer achievable.

There is no evidence this week of a broad change in manufacturing capacity or lead times beyond normal pre-holiday scheduling.

04 — Australian Project Conditions

The most recent ABS building approvals data remains the July 2026 release. The August release is scheduled for 30 September 2026, and conditions are recorded as unchanged pending that data.

What this means for projects
01

Recheck currency assumptions on any package being priced or committed this week, given the softer Australian dollar.

02

For orders not confirmed to load before Golden Week, obtain written post-holiday production, inspection and departure dates.

03

Confirm October booking arrangements with the freight forwarder, allowing for blank sailings around the holiday.

04

Do not bring purchasing forward on the strength of a single week's currency or index movement.
