Quality Assurance Before Production Begins

Most quality issues visible on site trace back to decisions made before production began. Specification ambiguity, unverified samples, unqualified factories and undocumented custom parameters together account for the majority of avoidable claims.

Pre-production quality assurance is the discipline of resolving those items before the production line runs, not after.

Every specification is reconfirmed with the factory before order release. Species, grade, dimension, wear layer, finishing system, packing configuration and warranty terms are cross-checked against the manufacturer's own capability sheet and against the approved sample.

Discrepancies identified here are resolved on paper. Discrepancies discovered on site are resolved by rework.

Approval samples are drawn from the same production capability that will run the order — not from a marketing set held at head office. Samples are signed off by the project team, mirrored at the manufacturer, and referenced against every subsequent production run.

The physical retention of matched control samples is the single most effective quality control in commercial supply.

Factory qualification is the process by which a manufacturer is confirmed as capable of executing the specification. It covers production capacity, quality systems, three-gate inspection discipline, documentation practice and freight coordination.

For established manufacturing relationships, qualification is a re-confirmation exercise. For new relationships, it is an on-site audit conducted before commercial engagement.

Before production release, the documentation package is locked: order specification, approved samples, technical envelope, batch expectations, packing configuration, freight plan, and delivery windows. Any subsequent change is a formal variation, not an operational adjustment.

The lock is what allows every subsequent step — production, inspection, freight, delivery — to run against a stable reference.

Handover from procurement to production is a documented event. The factory receives the locked specification pack, the release order and the delivery plan. Production begins against a reference that both parties have signed.

That handover is where pre-production quality assurance ends and in-process quality assurance begins — with no ambiguity between the two.
